Analysts believe that Donald Trump may take the initiative to normalize Israel's relations with Saudi Arabia in his second term. Earlier, during his first term, he implemented the Abraham Accords to normalize Israel's relations with the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Morocco and Sudan. Trump has already sent his designated Middle East envoy, Steven Witkoff, to visit Saudi Arabia. Witkoff met with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on Wednesday (December 11). The meeting discussed various issues including US-Saudi relations, the Gaza war and the possible normalization of Riyadh-Jerusalem, according to relevant sources.
Analysts say that normalizing Israel-Saudi relations will strengthen Israel's position in the Middle East. However, this may weaken the Palestinian demand for independence.
The current situation in Palestine is very delicate. More than 44,000 Palestinians have been officially killed in the conflict in Gaza for the past 14 months. In addition, there are countless more bodies under the rubble and deaths from starvation and lack of medicine due to the siege are beyond calculation.
Saudi Arabia has repeatedly said that it will not normalize relations with Israel without visible progress in establishing a Palestinian state. According to Riyadh, it is not possible to bring stability to the Middle East by ignoring the right of Palestinians to self-determination.
Saudi Ambassador Princess Reema bint Bandar al-Saud also said at the World Economic Forum, “Normalization with Israel is impossible without an irresistible path to the formation of a Palestinian state.”
However, experts believe that if Saudi Arabia deviates from this position in an attempt to sign a defense agreement with the United States, it could hurt its image in the Muslim world.
